Since February I have had the paint for little man’s room sitting in the garage. As everything else in his room has started coming together, I feel I have no choice but to actually get motivated and paint his room.
I really wanted to paint chevrons on his wall…I am obsessed! Love them.
All of these chevron walls look so beautiful, but after doing some research and planning, I figured it was a little too labor-intensive. Since this wall is going to be for little man’s room {and he hates sleeping anywhere but his own bed} I needed something that would be completed in a day…two max. After seeing some striped wall inspiration on Pinterest, I decided to paint large stripes on the wall behind his crib to add some visual interest.
I was all prepared to paint some chunky horizontal stripes, and literally the day before I was to start I saw this…
…and fell in love! Brittany over at Buttons Birds & BS is a genius and I love her for posting this chevron tutorial. I am very much like her in that I’d so rather be painting and creating than making calculations and measurements.
Of course, I opted to use this method for my feature wall. The grey paint was already purchased, so I’m going to stick with grey and white {though I will possibly end up changing it to grey and navy?}.
Here’s the view of little man’s room ‘prepped’ for taping.
To start, I taped the two vertical edges of the wall – to hopefully create a framed look – and the center stripe.
*Note: I HIGHLY recommend Frog Tape for any painting project you have! I used to just buy whatever the cheapest tape was, but I got sucked into the cute green packaging of Frog Tape one day and have never gone back. {You will see a little bit of blue tape in this project because I ran out of Frog Tape and couldn’t go out to get more…boo! }
There’s no picture for the next step, but I taped another line on each side of the center tape piece. Now the wall is in 4 vertical sections. {Pardon the fact that my taping doesn’t go to the top of the wall…I couldn’t get the big ladder upstairs and couldn’t reach using the little one. Oh the life of being vertically challenged.}
Once all of the vertical stripes were taped off, I decided that I wanted my chevrons to be 16 inches. From the baseboard, I measured 16 inches, made a dot, then taped my chevrons. After the first row was taped, I measured for the second row. You want to do it this way because if you measure everything, then tape, your stripes will end up being the wrong size. You could, I suppose, take into the account the size of the tape when you’re measuring; but that defeats the purpose of not having to do calculations. :-)
Here’s my wall fully taped…by this point, I was already in love with it! This process probably took me about 1 hour, maybe 1.5 hours.
The first step to painting crisp, clean lines on a wall is painting over the tape with the same color as your wall. In my case, the base wall color was Dover White. Make sure to really seal the line – this is how to prevent bleeding under the tape.
By the time I finished painting over the tape, the side that I started at was dry. This project really can be a one day paint job since there’s no lag-time between coats. I would highly recommend Dutch Boy Premium paint – it’s the only brand I’ll use anymore. Only one coat of grey was needed to cover the walls!
Give the paint a sufficient amount of time to dry. This was the WORST part of this project for me because I just wanted to see it finished! The paint doesn’t have to be completely dry, in fact, for the cleanest line you want to peel the tape before the paint is cured. I left mine for approximately 1 hour.

I am so obsessed with the finished product. From the picture frame border to the color to the perfectly-straight lines…I am in love.
There are a few more accent accessories for this wall and I think it’ll pull everything together nicely. {Keep an eye out for those projects later!}

LOVE IT! I saw that same chevron wall painting tutorial earlier this week & I fell for it… hard. I can’t paint walls in my current house, but I’m thinking of picking up a stack of canvases from Michaels and make some gorgeous Chevron stripes. Love how your room looks with the chevron wall! (Oh and I think I’d keep it grey and white and add rather add navy somewhere else).

Okay, I have to tell you how much I love this! I really, really do! I’ve been debating painting my daughters wall in chevron, but I had only seen the other tutorials and they seemed like soooo much work. This one seems much easier, and I actually like the end result better!
