Last week I told you to keep an eye out for a recipe that would be perfect for the homemade vanilla extract I shared with you. This is a delicious, kid-friendly recipe that will showcase your delicious vanilla extract perfectly! You might be asking why this recipe is kid-friendly…other than because it’s ice cream. Well, this recipe can be made 100% by your children, and *trust me* they’ll LOVE it! My mom used to make this with her class at school, and it’s been one that I’ve kept in my back pocked for those nights when my sweet tooth is begging for a treat.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 Tbsp. Sugar
1/2 C. Half & Half or Whipping Cream {milk works in a pinch}
1/4 tsp. Homemade Vanilla Extract
6 Tbsp. Rock Salt
1 Pint-Size Plastic Bag
1 Gallon-Size Plastic Bag
Ice Cubes
*This recipe makes one serving of ice cream. Feel free to double it, but if you’re going to make more than 2-servings, you’ll need to use more bags or it won’t freeze properly.
In your pint-size plastic bag, combine sugar, cream, and vanilla extract. Make sure the sugar is mixed in so you don’t end up with chunks in your finished ice cream.
Fill your gallon-size bag approximately 1/2 full with ice cubes. Sprinkle your rock salt in with the ice. I tried to do layers of ice and rock salt, but I’m not sure it actually matters.
Securely seal your smaller plastic bag and place inside the gallon bag. Zip up the larger bag and shake shake shake {for approximately 5 minutes}! This is the part where the kids usually want to be involved.
*Warning: don’t tip the bag upside-down while you’re shaking: the salt water will drip down your kitchen cabinets and be a pain to clean up…I know from experience.
When you’re done shaking, remove the smaller bag and wipe down the top before opening.
Now you have delicious homemade ice cream, and it only took you FIVE MINUTES!
Scoop out the ice cream and enjoy!
Our ice cream ended up being a bit soft. I believe we needed some more ice and maybe another 3 minutes of shaking.
I hope you LOVE your fresh, homemade ice cream {and your homemade vanilla extract}!
*Feel free to experiment by making your favorite ice cream flavors…want to try one of my favorites? Add 1/4 tsp. almond extract to the above recipe!
