This tutorial is for two different Easter baskets. One is a bunny and one is a chick. The basic directions are the same, the only differences are the accessories used to create the animals.
To start, cut out 5 7″ squares from your felt. To see what would happen, I used wool felt for the bunny and polyester felt for the chick. Definitely go with wool felt, the polyester worked, but it was nowhere near as sturdy as the wool felt. When the squares are cut, pin four of them together so they create a box {minus the top and bottom}. Sew the edges together with a small seam allowance {I used about 1/4″} leaving the cut edges of the felt facing out.
Once you’ve formed a box, pin the bottom on and sew the edges. The corners can get a bit tricky because of the bulky felt, but if you go slowly it’s not too difficult.
Just make sure to split the seams {see the photo for a better explanation}. Trim excess thread and any uneven felt edges, and you’ve completed the main body of your basket.
For the handles on my baskets, I used large ric-rac {which you can buy by the yard at JoAnn’s}. Take a yard of ric-rac and fold it in half. Sew the ends so the handle stays together, then burn the edges so there is no fraying.
Using hot glue, attach the ric-rac handle to your basket.
To make the chick, you’ll need orange felt and a yellow feather. Cut the orange felt in a triangle for the beak and hot glue it onto the front of your basket. Add a pair of googly eyes and center a yellow feather between them.
For the bunny, you’ll need an oversized white pipe cleaner. This will make both the ears of your bunny and the tail. Cut your pipe cleaner in half and then cut one half in half again. Fold the quarters in half and tie the ends together to create ears. Hot glue them to the inside front of the basket.
You’ll make the tail out of the other half of your pipe cleaner. I just wrapped it around my hand a few times then twisted it together with the end of the pipe cleaner. Using a lot of hot glue, attach the tail to the back of your basket. Cut a small nose out of pink felt. Glue on the nose and a pair of googly eyes.
And there you have it: a few super-cute animal-inspired felt Easter baskets. The kids are sure to love them!
