The following recipe is a top-secret one from my Grandma Hilda’s kitchen. She was a southern belle & many of her much-loved recipes have buttermilk in them. I will tell you that I was extremely skeptical about trying her buttermilk ice cream {and her buttermilk pie} but since I have tasted it, I don’t make any other kind!
This is probably the easiest ice cream recipe you will ever make & oh so delicious. It has a tart, tangy, sweet, rich flavor that you are sure to love! It is family tradition now to have Grandma Hilda’s Buttermilk Ice Cream for 4th of July {& Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving…you get the picture}.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 quarts Buttermilk {6 C.}
1 1/2 pints Whipping Cream {3 C.}
2 1/2 C. Sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp. Vanilla
In your ice cream freezer, combine buttermilk and whipping cream. Stir to mix.
Add sugar & stir well.
Pour in vanilla. Get the freezer ready to go.
Follow the ice cream maker instruction manual on how to properly freeze.
Most of the time it doesn’t take too long for this ice cream to reach the correct consistency. Usually it takes me about 1.5 – 2 hours at the most. But, check on it frequently.
This ice cream is best served right away {so nice & creamy}. If you can’t eat it right out of the ice cream maker, just scoop it into a Tupperware & put it in the freezer until ready to serve.
I tried to get a picture of the finished ice cream. But, um….
:-D
Delicious!
I hope you enjoy my Grandma Hilda’s Buttermilk Ice Cream!
