No-Sew Shark Costume

I have been trying to plan for little man’s Halloween costume for quite some time now. There are just SO many adorable ideas on Pinterest! With my sewing machine broken, I have been going back-and-forth with myself on whether or not I should just purchase a costume this year. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay so much money for a cheap costume. So I decided to make an affordable no-sew costume!

Little man has loved sharks since we first visited the Indianapolis Zoo…the shark tank is his FAVORITE place to visit! So, that was an easy decision.
I love the fact that with this costume, he will be able to stay warm for the chilly Indiana Halloween. Another plus? This cost me approximately $10! Can’t go wrong with that!

What You’ll Need:

Grey Sweat Suit
Hot Glue Gun
White Felt
Black Felt
Grey Felt

The sweat suit I purchased at Wal-Mart for $6.00. It’s a size 3T, so keep in mind that if your child is a larger size you might need more felt pieces than I used.

I held a sheet of white felt {that cost me $.30 at Michael’s} up to the zipped-up jacket and sketched out a shark belly. Once the felt is cut out, you’ll need to cut down the center and glue the pieces to either side of the zipper.

I didn’t like the unfinished look around the zipper, so I cut out a small line of felt and glued it to the left side of the zipper, creating a zipper-flap.

Cut two circles from the black felt for eyes. {I used the lid of my Martha Stewart Fabric Stiffener as a template}. Glue one onto either side of the hood.

Next, you’ll need to cut out the shark fin. I could not find any felt that matched perfectly {though it matches better than the photo above depicts}, but it’s not that noticeable. I folded one felt sheet in half and cut out two identical pieces to make the fin. If your child is larger than my little man is, you might need to use two pieces of felt. Glue the two fin pieces together to make it a little more sturdy. Then, cut out a piece of felt the same length as your fin and glue it to the center{ish} of the back. Then, glue the fin onto the center of this piece of felt. Make sure the glue is dried before you let go.

Now, cut out teeth from a white sheet of felt. I needed two rows of teeth, which came from the same felt sheet. Then glue the teeth onto the inside of your hoodie.

All you need to do now is give it a test run and “ooh” and “ahh” over how adorable your little shark is!

You might even want to teach them to make a fin and go “dun nuh…dun nuh…” when someone opens the door!

Little man did NOT want to take this off! And the frugal momma in me loves that I can let him wear the pants even after Halloween. I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy no-sew shark costume!

  8. Darn! Wish I would have seen this before. I got the shark costume from Old Navy, but my son is unhappy with the feet on it and how the belly has extra padding. Your costume wouldn’t have had those problems AND it would have been cheaper!
